NYC DOT TMC Engineering Support and Services

Fortis provides engineering support and services to the City of New York Traffic Management Center (TMC). With over 500+ closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV’s), 14000+ traffic signals, 1000+ detectors and other corresponding equipment, NYC DOT ATMS is considered the largest ATMS system in the western hemisphere. Routine operational tasks include: support of the TMC Video Management System, Video Sharing Systems, Assets Management System, Help Desk, Fiber Management System, and Repair Management System, all which provide various types of reports in real-time.
NYC Citywide Inter-Agency Video Sharing

Fortis has designed and implemented innovative solutions for video sharing between over a dozen multi-jurisdictional partners. We provide our clients with the ability to react quickly during emergency situations by creating a common operating picture. Using our products and solutions, agency command centers can dispatch proper resources to respond to events/incidents in order to protect the public and infrastructure. Our system was successfully utilized during major NYC events such as: Super Bowl XLVIII (New York/New Jersey), NYC Marathons, New Year’s Eve Ball drop in Times Square, UN General Assembly and Pope Francis USA visit.
MTA On-call

As a sub-consultant, Fortis is developing conceptual designs and providing recommendations on a variety of client initiatives, including deployment of Video Walls at the MTA Traffic Management Center (TMC), design of the Video Management System (VMS), and conceptual design of the primary and redundant TMC’s. Fortis provides recommendations for ITS inventory approaches and tests and provides reports and recommendations for various types of ITS devices.
ITS Fiber Management System Implementation (Brooklyn Bridge)

The Brooklyn Bridge looms majestically over New York City’s East River and provides passage to millions of commuters and tourists on a daily basis. Fortis provides a solution for fiber infrastructure inventory at the famous New York City (NYC) landmark Brooklyn Bridge. Based on “OPEK ITS Orchestrator™” Connection Management Portal (CMP), as-built documentation and OTDR tests complete documentation of the fiber conduits, trunks, and splicing populated to the system with the ability to view information in a variety of geocoded maps. The system displays devices connected via fiber, detailing splicing information, network communication statistics and monitoring.
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Network Design 5 NY Borough

Fortis has planned, designed, and implemented an optimum networking solution for the entire 5 NY Borough ITS infrastructure. The solution includes a network security perimeter architecture with multiple layers of defense, up-to-date and hardened policies and controls, and segmentation. Our rock-solid design ensures reliable communication with 2000+ RTMS’s and tag readers, 300+ cameras, and 100+ DMSs/PDMSs and HARs. Fortis has also provided a ready to use platform for the expansion of the ITS mobility initiatives.
Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Citywide Assets Management System

Fortis implemented “OPEK ITS Orchestrator Assets Management Portal” (AMP) which is an assets management software package intending to document over 10.1B of NYC DOT ITS assets, including 6,300 miles of streets, the largest municipal street-lighting system in the country consisting of 262,000+ lights, 162,000 corners with corresponding infrastructure, 14,000+ traffic signals, a variety of DMS’s, CCTV’s, RTMS’s and other ITS and IT corresponding devices currently installed on New York City streets. AMP improves asset acquisition, reliability and compliance as well as minimizes operational and maintenance costs. AMP is a more proactive and high-level accuracy management solution.

Our clients benefit from using a flexible and highly customizable interface which allows for asset management regardless of their specializations. Fortis developed the advanced Assets Management Portal (AMP), which is scalable to account hundreds of thousands of items and includes unique capabilities to account for assets using built-in properties that self-expand by creating new characteristics without the need for re-coding
Assets Management Portal for Pedestrian Ramps

Pedestrian ramps are an essential tool for all pedestrians, providing access on and off New York City streets and sidewalks. NYC DOT maintains 320,000+ pedestrian ramps. The Assets Management Portal for Pedestrian Ramps supports DOT in all phases of ramp upgrades and maintenance, including the ability to upload initial as-builds, photos, drawings and corresponding documentation, schedule inspections, submissions and reviews. AMP tracks progress of the construction and upgrades, with the ability to display original, intermediate and final designs on geocoded maps. The system provides a variety of reports, alerts, and notifications, and allows for simplification and automation of ramp inventory processes.
“Green” Data Center Initiative

Fortis has provided custom award-winning solutions to optimize and renovate our client’s data centers to be compliant with “Green Data Center” standards. According to the NY Governor Office series of innovative clean energy and environmental initiatives, Fortis has implemented different components in data centers such as mercury-less and lower power consumption video walls as well as other HP ENERGY STAR® qualified products. This solution was presented with the “Outstanding ITS Project of the Year” award.
Bronx/Queens Over-Height Vehicle Detection (OHVD) Project

Research conducted by the University Transportation Research Center at the City College of New York indicates that bridges in the NYC area experience over 200 strikes on an annual basis. Per New York Governor’s Office direction, the New York State Department of Transportation has taken a series of steps to investigate and reduce the number of bridge strikes caused by commercial vehicles on parkways and highways, including the Bronx/Queens Over-Height Vehicle Detection (OHVD) project. Fortis Consulting Services provided the design of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network infrastructure for the project, performed system integration and provided further system support. The system includes 6 VMS’s, 11 CCTVs and sensors, and corresponding communication infrastructure.
